Pregnancy puts real, measurable demands on the body. Your center of gravity shifts, your pelvis widens, your ligaments loosen, and the muscles supporting your spine take on a load they were not designed to carry alone. For many women, that adds up to persistent back pain during pregnancy, hip tightness, sciatica, and a general sense that their body is working against them when it should be working with them.

At Crystal Springs Chiropractic, we provide prenatal chiropractic care adapted to the changing needs of pregnancy. If you are dealing with discomfort that seems harder than it needs to be, we would like to help. Schedule a visit with our San Mateo team and let us take a proper look at what is going on.

Why Pregnancy Changes the Spine and Pelvis

The physical changes of pregnancy happen fast, and the musculoskeletal system does not always adapt smoothly. Relaxin, the hormone that loosens ligaments to prepare the pelvis for delivery, can also impact the stability of every other joint in the body. These changes, combined with postural shift caused by a growing abdomen, create the conditions for spinal misalignment and pelvic imbalance.

Research published in the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health found that approximately 50% of pregnant women experience back pain at some point during pregnancy. A significant portion describe the pain as moderate to severe. Standard recommendations of rest, heat, and stretching address the symptoms but not the structural contributors. That is where chiropractic care during pregnancy fills in.

What We Address with Prenatal Chiropractic Adjustments

Pregnancy-related musculoskeletal complaints follow predictable patterns. We see them regularly at our San Mateo clinic. We have adapted our approach to meet each one with techniques that are safe and appropriate for every stage of pregnancy.

The presentations we most commonly work with include:

  • Lower back pain — driven by anterior pelvic tilt as the belly grows, which compresses the lumbar segments and shortens the hip flexors
  • Sciatica — the expanding uterus can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, producing radiating pain down one or both legs that worsens with sitting or standing for extended periods
  • Pubic symphysis pain — as the pelvic joints loosen and shift, instability at the front of the pelvis produces a sharp, catching pain with walking or transitioning between positions
  • Upper back and rib pain — as the thoracic spine accommodates changes in posture and breast weight increases, mid-back discomfort and rib restriction become common, especially in the second trimester
  • Round ligament pain — sharp, pulling discomfort along the sides of the lower abdomen that can be aggravated by sudden movement
  • Headaches and neck tension — posture shifts that load the cervical spine differently often produce tension headaches, particularly in the first and third trimesters

If any of these have been part of your experience, a pregnancy chiropractic assessment is a useful next step. Getting ahead of these patterns early makes the second half of pregnancy easier to manage.

How Prenatal Care Fits Into Each Trimester

The needs change as pregnancy develops. Rather than applying the same approach from start to finish, we build care plans that account for where you are in the process.

In the first trimester, the primary focus is stabilization. Hormonal changes are in full swing, the body is beginning to shift structurally, and many women are also managing nausea and fatigue. Gentle spinal adjustment in this phase supports the nervous system as it coordinates these early changes. Some patients report improvements in pregnancy-related discomforts, including nausea, though results vary.

The second trimester is typically when musculoskeletal complaints become more pronounced. The belly is visible, the postural shift is underway, and the lower back begins to bear more load. For many women in the greater San Mateo area, this is the stage when pregnancy-related discomfort becomes difficult to ignore. It is also an ideal time to seek care, as addressing alignment and mobility concerns early may help reduce the strain that tends to accumulate as pregnancy progresses.

In the third trimester, the goals shift toward pelvic preparation and pain management. Visits often become more frequent as delivery approaches. We focus on keeping the sacroiliac joints mobile, the pelvis balanced, and the soft tissue around the uterus free of unnecessary tension. Some patients report feeling more comfortable and mobile as delivery approaches when pelvic balance and mobility are addressed throughout pregnancy.

We would be glad to walk you through what a care plan specific to your trimester and situation would look like. Book an appointment and come in for an assessment.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?

Dr. Jordan Savara

Chiropractic care for pregnant women is well-supported by the evidence when performed by a provider trained in prenatal techniques. The American Pregnancy Association recognizes chiropractic care as a safe option during pregnancy when performed by a provider trained in pregnancy-specific techniques.

That said, there are situations where care is modified or where we coordinate with your OB or midwife before proceeding. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, placenta previa, ectopic pregnancy, or vaginal bleeding, we will review your situation before beginning any treatment. Transparency about your medical history helps us make the right call for you and your baby.

Positioning during prenatal chiropractic adjustments is handled with purpose. We use specialized cushioning that allows you to lie face-down safely by accommodating the belly and side-lying positions as needed throughout the later stages. The techniques we use apply no direct force to the abdomen at any point.

Postpartum Care After Delivery

The postpartum period brings its own physical demands. As the body recovers from pregnancy and delivery, many new mothers experience pelvic instability, neck pain, upper back tension, and postural strain related to nursing, carrying, and caring for a newborn.

We often work with patients through the postpartum recovery period as a natural continuation of prenatal care. Whether you are an existing patient or visiting us for the first time, we begin with a thorough assessment and develop a care plan based on your specific needs and recovery goals.
